A Fly Fishing Trip in New Brunswick Canada

fly fishing guideWho doesn’t love the idea of going on a fly fishing trip? Okay my wife Jenny is one who has no desire to pick up a fly rod or any fishing rod for that matter. She would much prefer to watch me do the fishing when we take trips.

New Brunswick Canada has some of the best Atlantic salmon fly fishing in the world. It doesn’t matter how many times I fly fish for salmon it’s always a great time. I even manage to hook into a few niche brook trout, so tasty.

I may have mentioned this before but it was actually the great fly fishing for Atlantic salmon and brook trout that forced me to make New Brunswick my home. I used to say it was family but now the truth is out.

Getting hooked on Atlantic salmon fishing happened almost immediately. The first time I saw one of these beautiful fish leap out of the water and I was out of control. Today it’s still the fishing that keeps me here and it’s been more than 30 years and I’m still loving it.

Allow me to share a few of the places I have fished for Atlantic salmon. I have only just recently purchased a video camera so I have no video of my own so here are a few videos from Youtube. Maybe next year I will have some videos of my own.

The Cains River Salmon Fishing

I have done a lot of fly fishing along the Cains river and have a lot of great memories of fly fishing for both trout and salmon. The reason I love the Cains so much is due to the fact I can be fly fishing in less than 2 hours. So it’s a great place to head after work.

Here is an example of a nice little brook trout being caught. I have caught a few nice trout here over the years but I go to this place for the salmon.

Any of the big brook trout I have landed on the Cains were hooked right at the mouth of cold water brooks that feed the Cains during those hot days of summer.

The spot I fly fish on the Cains is about an hour and a half from Moncton.

The Restigouche River Salmon

It’s about a 4 hour drive north from Moncton to Campbellton New Brunswick and I’ve made the trip many times as it’s where my wife is from. It was great to use the excuse that we should visit Jenny’s parents so that I could fly fishing the Restigouche river until dark.

The Restigouche river is a famous Atlantic salmon river and is known world wide. I miss fishing there but we haven’t been up there since Jenny’s parents passed away 10 years ago. There are so many place to fish for salmon that are closer to home these days.

The Miramichi River Salmon Fishing

The Miramichi river is also a very famous river, maybe even more so than the Restigouche river is. I still remember the first Atlantic salmon I caught in this river. It wasn’t more than 10 minutes after we started fly fishing this crystal clear water.

Quarryville Salmon Fishing

I started fly fishing for brook trout years ago and soon moved to salmon and then on to smallmouth bass and chain pickerel on the fly. They are so much fun and can give you quite an exciting workout.

This year Casey, Jamie and myself are planning to use our fly rods more often for the species we fish. Casey has been angling longer than I have but has never tried fly fishing so this year is the year to give him a brand new experience.

But fly fishing for trout and salmon is only the beginning as I love to fly fish for smallmouth bass as well as our toothy Chain pickerel.
